Texas Hold’em or Omaha: find your game
Two, four or five hole cards. Discover what changes between the variants and why Omaha’s hand rule matters.
Black Sheep Poker has three variants: Texas Hold’em, Omaha and five-card Omaha. They share blinds, five community cards and preflop, flop, turn and river betting rounds. The most important difference is the number of hole cards and how you must use them.
Texas Hold’em: two cards, flexible choices
Each player receives two private cards. Your final five-card hand may use both, one or neither. Sometimes the best hand is entirely on the board, so the remaining players tie.
Texas Hold’em at Black Sheep Poker uses No Limit betting. On your turn, you can wager up to all the chips in your stack, subject to the minimum-raise rules.
Omaha: exactly two plus three
Omaha gives each player four hole cards. Your final hand must contain exactly two of those cards and exactly three community cards. More starting cards create more possible combinations, but the two-plus-three rule never changes.
Suppose you hold A♠ K♦ Q♥ J♣ and the board contains four spades. Holding the ace of spades alone is not enough for an Omaha flush. You need two spades among your hole cards and three on the board.
Another example: if you hold A-A-A-K, you cannot use all three aces together. You still must select exactly two hole cards, even when your starting combination looks strong.
Five-card Omaha
Five-card Omaha adds one more hole card but keeps the same final-hand rule: two from your hand and three from the board. The number of possible hole-card pairs increases from six with four cards to ten with five cards. You have more combinations to consider on each street.
Both Omaha variants at Black Sheep Poker use Pot Limit betting. The maximum bet depends on the current pot and the amount you need to call. The interface calculates the limit for you.
A Pot Limit example
If there are 100 chips in the pot and nobody has bet this round, the maximum opening bet is 100. If a player instead bets 20, the pot becomes 120. To make the maximum raise, first call 20, bringing the pot to 140, then raise by up to 140 more. Your total wager on that street is 160, provided your stack can cover it.
Where should you start?
If you are still learning the betting rounds and hand rankings, begin with Hold’em. Then try Omaha against bots and identify which two hole cards actually make your hand. Repeat the exercise in five-card Omaha without assuming that more cards guarantee a win.
Every Black Sheep Poker variant uses play chips, with no purchases, withdrawals or monetary value. Pick the game whose decisions you would like to practise.
